If you are unhappy with your job, should you leave it without giving it a second thought?

Here are the tips to help you tackle the situation if you’re unhappy at work and make an appropriate decision:

  1. Do brainstorming. Find out the reasons why you are unhappy.
  2. Once you have listed the reasons, ask yourself whether you could change any of your situations that are making you unhappy by yourself. For example, you may ask your manager to assign some other tasks or projects.
  3. Is the situation that is making you worry temporary or permanent? If it is temporary, just bear it for some time rather than deciding to quit.
  4. If work environment is an issue or if you’re not on good terms with your manager or if your skills are unfitting to your job, think if you can shift to some other department before thinking of leaving your job.
  5. If you’re feeling stagnant and your output is not getting due recognition or if your job is impacting your mental health, it’s better to look out for a new job straightaway.
  6. If you’re overloaded with work, it may most probably be a temporary phase and you need to make a decision accordingly.
  7. If it is just that you feel you’re missing the old enthusiasm in your job, better talk to your boss if you could find something more thrilling before you decide to quit.
  8. If you’re paid way below your market value or you believe you can do much bigger, you are of course at the stage when you need to make a move from your existing job.
  9. In any situation and for any reasons that are curable, if your organisation is good, you should communicate with your seniors first to find out if your difficulty could be sorted out before deciding to make a move.
