Vitamin supplements are quite common these days despite the fact that there can be no alternative to a natural diet. Even medical science recommends taking a proper diet along with the supplements.
Here are the tips and advice to help you know the natural source of the main vitamins:
- Vitamin D: We all know that the main source of vitamin D, the vitamin for bones and absorption of calcium, is sunlight (direct exposure without any glasses or obstruction). However, on the days when sunlight is not available, like in the winter season, we may fall short of what we need. The dietary sources of vitamin D are certain cereals, dairy products, milk, almond milk, mushroom, cod liver oil, tuna, fatty fish, egg yolks, beef liver etc.
- Vitamin B12: Required for nerve functions, this essential vitamin is available in dairy products like yoghurt and cheese, whole milk, nutritional yeast, shitake mushroom, eggs, fish (salmon, trout, sardines), beef, lean meat (animal liver and kidneys) and clams.
- Vitamin A: Needed for eyes and healthy skin, this vitamin is found in leafy green vegetables, orange and yellow fruits and vegetables (such as sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, papaya and mango), tomatoes, milk, cheese, eggs, fish oils and beef or lamb liver etc.
- Vitamin B6: Responsible for effective use of fat, carbs and proteins, this vitamin is available in bananas, whole-grain cereals, chickpeas, tuna, salmon, chicken breast, pork, ham etc.
- Vitamin C: Required for iron absorption, gums and bones, this vitamin is found in citrus fruits, guava, kiwis, fortified fruit juices, lemon, broccoli, tomatoes etc.
Disclaimer: The care has been taken to find the above after verifying from different sources. However, it would be better to crosscheck once more yourself.
